They’re a perfect way to bring even more spooky fun to the season!

As the days shorten, we love incorporating board games into our evening routine to help us unwind after a busy day. In this post, I’m excited to share some of our family’s favorite Halloween board games, along with a few that are on our Wish List for next year. These games are perfect for a “spooktacular” game night or just a fun, family-friendly Halloween activity to enjoy this season.

Our Favorite Halloween Board Games for Kids

Ghost Fightin’ Treasure Hunters

In the game Ghost Fightin’ Treasure Hunters, you must work together with other players to escape from a haunted house with 8 valuable jewels before the ghosts take over. Move carefully through the rooms, pick up and drop off jewels, and fight ghosts with your teammates. It’s a fun, but challenging cooperative board game that requires good communication skills and strategic thinking.

Ghost Fightin’ Treasure Hunters is a big hit with my kids and their friends! Once you’ve got the hang of the original game, don’t miss out on the expansion pack, Creepy Cellar.

Couch Skeletons

This year Couch Skeletons is a top Halloween game pick for us. It’s a quick, fun, and easy-to-carry game perfect for two players. I’m planning to stash it in our gym bag, so we can enjoy a few rounds while waiting at gymnastics practice each week.

Ticket to Ride: Ghost Train

Ticket to Ride: Ghost Train gives a spooky spin to the beloved Ticket to Ride series. Venture through a haunted mansion, navigate a chilling swamp, and uncover the mysteries of an old witch’s cave. With its eerie artwork and straightforward gameplay, this Halloween-themed edition is a fantastic choice for family fun

13 Dead End Drive

Often described as a cross between Clue and Mouse Trap, in 13 Dead End Drive Aunt Agatha has left behind a fortune, and you could be the lucky inheritor. To win, you must guide your pawn to the “Game Over” space when your portrait is shown on the wall. Alternatively, outlast everyone else, and you’ll be the last one standing to inherit Aunt Agatha’s wealth. Full of deceit, you’ll have to beware of traps in the mansion!

Coco: Remember Me

My kids love playing loteria, a traditional Mexican game of chance similar to bingo but with images instead of numbers. Inspired by the Disney Pixar film Coco, this version of loteria would be a fun addition to family game nights throughout October as you learn more about Dia de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead” in English.

Mists Over Carcassonne

Mists Over Carcassonne is a cooperative twist on the classic tile-laying game Carcassonne. In this version, players work together to place tiles strategically to score points while managing the number of ghosts that appear. Mists Over Carcassonne can be played as a stand-alone game or integrated into the base game.

Hocus Pocus: The Game

Our family had a great time playing this Hocus Pocus-themed game, where we teamed up to stop the Sanderson Sisters from completing their potion. The goal is to ruin their potion three times to make the sun rise, but the twist is that you can’t openly share your cards, relying on strategic questions instead. Though it’s a cooperative game with a bit of luck involved, it’s quite challenging, so house rules like allowing open discussions can make it more approachable. Perfect for movie fans or anyone looking for a fun, family-friendly challenge this Halloween.

Pátzcuaro

Pátzcuaro is a family-friendly board game inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead, where players compete to build the most beautiful ofrenda (altar) by collecting and trading items from city shops. The game’s vibrantly colored artwork and simple mechanics make it a great way to help kids explore Mexican traditions this fall.

Ghost Blitz

Ghost Blitz is a fast-paced dexterity game that’s all about quick thinking and reflexes. Players race to grab or call out the correct object based on what’s shown on a card. It’s a great pattern recognition game that should work well for a variety of ages, making it a top pick for a Halloween game night.

Ghosts Love Candy, Too

In this Halloween-themed game, players take on the role of ghosts who haunt trick-or-treating kids to steal their candy, but must be careful not to scare them away. The game is fun, easy to learn, and perfect for families looking for a spooky, light-hearted challenge.

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

The colorful cards and characters in costumes add a fun, spooky twist on the original Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, making it perfect for a Halloween party. The game’s easy to learn, fast-paced, and guarantees lots of laughs with its simple yet engaging gameplay.

The Haunted Mansion

Based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, the Haunted Mansion game challenges players to score the most points by collecting sets of ghost cards from various rooms while avoiding the mischievous hitchhiking ghosts. The Magic Kingdom edition adds a playful twist with glow-in-the-dark ghosts, making it an extra fun experience for kids.

Shadows in the Woods

The board game Shadows in the Woods features a fun and innovative twist: you play in the dark! In this cooperative hide-and-seek game played by candlelight, players try to avoid the seeker. This game is also an exciting way for kids to learn more about light rays and shadows, a topic that could easily be turned into an engaging unit study this time of the year.

While Shadows in the Forest in more widely available to families in the United States, you can find the original Shadows in the Woods board game on Nest.ca or MamaOwl.net.
